System: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R rev. 2.0
CPU: Intel Core i7-960
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon 5870 1GB

I'm putting together a new system with the following components:

Core i7-960
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R rev 2.0
ATI Radeon HD 5870

Which system definition will be best? The most common choice seems to be 3,1, but I'm wondering if 4,1 or 5,1 have any advantages?

Some users have reported power management throttling video card and cpu performance in 5,1.

I've searched, but I can't find any information on what the differences actually are (other than how they relate to the differences between the real Mac Pro models).

Perhaps tony or macman could weigh in? Is there an "official" recommendation. What have other user's experiences been?

Thanks!

Take a look at this wiki entry

wiki/index.php?title=Smbios.plist

MacPro3.1 is generally the best option from a performance stanpoint

Hmm...

Since I'm using a reference 5870, which currently ships in the Mac Pro, would it be safe to use MacPro5,1? Are there any advantages to using the newer SMBIOS'?

Thanks for the help!

Try all three and use Cinebench and NovaBench and report back what each setting gives you for a benchmark please.

Thanks.

You seem to have similar hardware. Have you tried all three? What were your results? Did your video card get throttled since it's not a card that's shipped with a Mac Pro?

I'll do some experimenting once the build is up and running :)

I only tried 5,1 and 3,1. 3,1 is for sure has better graphic benchmark results for me. Haven't tried 4,1 though.
