When I first heard about 10.8, I checked my calendar just to be sure it wasn't April fools... And sadly, it wasn't I don't get why they would release a new version of OS X while Lion is at it's prime? Not a wise move in my opinion. Something tells me that 2012 is the new 1985 for Apple. Snow Leopard is the best OS if you ask me. After SL, OS X has been going downhill. I REALLY don't like how they are trying to implant iOS features onto OS X. Perhaps they are doing it because they want iPad to run Mt. Lion, but still, tablets are tablets, and PCs are PCs. (Personal Computers ).

So far this is how I see it:
They are making mac os x more friendly with mobile devices, whereas Windows is making their os a mobile os. I feel this is a good step, but they shouldn't make it too simplified as we still want a proper desktop os that can be used by enthusiasts etc.
As for letting os x run on any hardware, i think apple may have it up its sleeve. But apple usually transitions slowly, as we see the slow change of os x being more friendly with mobile devices from snow leopard to mountain lion.
I think they are giving a very slight hint, and may confirm it when os x 11 comes out (which i presume will be completely new)
Without Steve, i think apple is loosing a little speed, and this new release will (hopefully) get them back on track.
I am very interested to see what (or even if there is any) then next revolutionary product will be (eg mac, ipad, iphone) without Steve Jobs.
Looking forward to mountain lion anyway...!

WOW, didn't realize that there were so many strong feelings about Lion....well the good news is one can stay with Snow or Lion or update, no one is forcing any change on any of us. Or you can just install each on a separate partition and have the best of both worlds.
In terms of OS X and iOS merging, I personally like a lot of the features that have already come over such as Launchpad, Mission Control and full-screen apps. OS X has always been a work (or art) in progress and while not everyone likes all the new features, we can pick and choose which to click on.
No real surprises, iOS has really killed it and Apple would like to do the same with the desktop as well as feed more users into the iTunes/AppStore/iCloud/iPhone/iPad/OSX universe. Doubt they will license OSX to others any more than they do iOS, not likely to happen. If they move to ARM for the OS, it won't be alone as Win and Linux will be there too and that means bootloaders should be possible to allow triple-booting on that platform. In any case Intel will be safe for at least 4 or 5 years based on past Apple support history.

Maybe the dropping of "Mac" in Mac OSX hints that an OSX equipped "pro" iPad is to come. It will probably only support software written for ARM-chips though. Much like the ARM-version of Windows 8

Apple has a history of dropping words/features... Apple Computer --> Apple Mac OSX --> OSX 2 button mouse --> 1 button mouse People complained about the 1 button mouse so... 1 button mouse --> no button mouse (just to spite us

I always enjoy when I see a company in constant development. I have a love hate relationship with Lion. I like full screen apps, and how easy it is to swipe across to the next one. I just hate how fullscreen apps don't support mulit monitors. I have a triple monitor mackintosh at home and it seems almost useless because I can only have one full screen app up at once. the other two monitors are just blanks. I hope this gets fixed in 10.8 I'm getting the iMessage beta. I think it will be cool
